The First Step is the Hardest
There is this quote that I’ve long admired and used everywhere I can - in my online profiles, signatures, etc: “An ounce of action is worth a ton of theory.”
As much as I believe this to be true, it’s easier said than done. I am sure many people prefer to live a life of action vs inaction. So why is it so difficult to make things happen? Whether it’s getting back...
Small acts of respect
Respect is something most people would agree in theory is a good thing. Putting into practice is another story.
Three things that come to mind:
If you’re reaching out to someone to ask them for help or for a favor, you should be the one to call them or meet them where they are. Make it easy for them. Don’t tell them to call you or to go out of their way to meet you. If...

Musings on carried tax interest
A handful of VCs have come out to support the new house bill which will tax carried interest no longer as capital gains, but now as ordinary income treatment.
In reading these positions, I’ve come to think about the situation as follows:
Capital that goes into a VC fund is supplied by various sources (wealthy ppl, etc)
VCs are, for all intents and purposes, the money managers. Unless...

“Rare Visions of Rural North Korea” - photo essay from TIME
The history of the Korean War has always fascinated me, more so in recent years. It is mind boggling that what is known today as the hermit kingdom was once called home by my grandparents. The story of how they fled to the south is amazing and it is because of their bravery that my family is here today.
Looking through the...
WWDC app - not for everyone
Apple released their official WWDC app to help attendees find sessions and other conference-related info. However, to my dismay:
The software, which can be downloaded at developer.apple.com/wwdc/app, is only available for those attending the conference. Attendees can access it by logging in with the account used to purchase their WWDC ticket. (http://bit.ly/cPPg4r)
Seriously?

AVC Meetup: Palo Alto edition
Today was the first AVC Meetup for Palo Alto. A bunch of AVC readers gathered in downtown Palo Alto to meet each other, talk shop, and geek out. Overall, invigorating conversation had by all and an impressive turnout. We all agreed that we should convene again soon.
My own observations:
I haven’t been surrounded by that much energy and infectious enthusiasm in awhile. It was a lot of fun....

I heart Disqus
For anyone who runs a blog, the comments they receive on their blog posts are just as valuable as the content they post. I started using Disqus for my blog commenting system, mainly because of the tight integration with Tumblr. All I have to do to get Disqus running (aside from signing up for a Disqus account) is add my Disqus user name in my Tumblr settings. Even if I change the theme or tinker...
The Dream Job
As kids, we dreamed about what we wanted to be when we grew up. Whether or not we ended up in that profession, many of us still cling to that mindset - that there is something we’re either supposed to be doing or that our professional lives have a final destination. How many times have you heard people say “I’m XX years old and still haven’t figured out what I want to...
